A claim rejection is not the end of the road. Most policyholders give up after the first rejection letter, but the law provides multiple layers of protection for you. Whether it is a life insurance death claim or a health insurance reimbursement, here is your roadmap to fighting back.

Why Claims Get Rejected

Common reasons include non-disclosure of pre-existing diseases, technical errors in the form, or policy exclusions. LIC and other insurers must provide a specific reason for rejection in writing.

Step 1: Request a Formal Rejection Letter

Do not accept a verbal rejection. You need the formal letter stating the exact clause under which the claim was denied. This is your primary evidence for an appeal.

Step 2: The Internal Grievance Redressal (GRO)

Every insurer has a Grievance Redressal Officer. Write a formal letter explaining why the rejection is unfair. Attach supporting medical records or evidence that contradicts the insurer's reason.

Step 3: Approach the Insurance Ombudsman

If the insurer doesn't respond within 30 days or rejects your internal appeal, the Ombudsman is your best friend. This is a free quasi-judicial body that resolves disputes between insurers and policyholders. No lawyer is required.

Step 4: IRDAI Bima Bharosa

You can also register your complaint on the IRDAI's Bima Bharosa portal. This puts the insurer under regulatory scrutiny and often speeds up the resolution process.
