Every vehicle owner must have third party motor insurance. But is it enough?
Third Party Insurance covers:
- Third party death/injury and property damage Does NOT cover:
- Damage to your own car, your injuries, theft, natural disasters
Comprehensive Insurance covers:
- Third party liability + own damage + personal accident cover
Scenarios:
- Your car damaged: Third party = you pay. Comprehensive = insurer pays.
- Car stolen: Third party = nothing. Comprehensive = insurer pays IDV.
- Flood damage: Third party = you pay. Comprehensive = insurer covers.
Premium (Third Party, fixed by IRDAI):
- Up to 1000cc: Rs.2,097/year
- 1000-1500cc: Rs.3,416/year
- Above 1500cc: Rs.7,897/year
The Bottom Line: For most car owners, comprehensive insurance is worth the extra premium. One major accident can exceed years of premium payments.
